PURPOSE:To make it possible to detect cutting failure in any early stage by comparing the output of threshold value of load change rate setting member with the output of load change rate detecting member and hence judging whether a large load fluctuation is caused either by the failure of tool or the failure of feed speed control. CONSTITUTION:When a load signal S1 is (markedly) deviated from a target load signal S2 at time t2, a difference signal S3 is deviated from an allowable range R. A feed speed setting circuit 24 transmits an override signal S4 to a cutting tool 1 as a directive to reduce the feed speed and also outputs a drive signal S4' to a failure detecting member 3. If the load signal S1 fails to fall quickly even when the feed speed is reduced, the value of a load change rate signal S5 will exceed a threshold value S6' thereby allowing a comparison circuit 33 to transmitt a failure detection signal S7. When load fluctuation are caused by feed speed control, the value of the S5 is smaller than the value of S6' and hence the failure detection signal S7 is not transmitted. With this construction, the failure of tool can be detected.
