Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled concentrate useful as vitamin E, an antioxidant, etc. by easy operations in a high concentration and high yield, by esterifying free fatty acids in a deodroiz distillate of a fat or oil with a polyhydric alcohol, and extracting the resultant ester with a hydrous alcohol.
CONSTITUTION: A di- or polyhydric alcohol, e.g. ethylene glycol, is added to a deodorized distillate formed as a by-product in a deodorizing step of a vegetable fat or oil, e.g. soybean oil or rapeseed oil, or a material, containing tocopherol, e.g. α-, β- or γ-tocopherol, and obtained by concentrating the distillate to esterify free fatty acids therein. The resultant esterified material is concentrated if necessary, and the tocopherol is then extracted with a hydrous alcohol, e.g. methanol or ethanol with a moisture content of 2W50wt%. A monohydric alcohol has a high solubility of ester in the hydrous one, and the free fatty acids can not be removed by the extraction. Thus, the object of the concentration is not achieved.
