Abstract

PURPOSE:To simplify a working process of a thin film magnetic head, and to obtain a magnetic head having high accuracy, by providing a recording and reproducing part and a protective film for covering it, on the surface of a substrate, and constituting so that the protective film has a function as a slider as well. CONSTITUTION:A thin film recording and reproducing part 2 of horizontal structure is formed on a substrate 1. Subsequently, a protective film 6 consisting of SiO2, etc. whose thickness is >=several mum is made to adhere onto said part, and after that, it protective film 6 is etched so as to have the same width as width of a desired slider. The surface of the protective film 6 is lapped until a gap 7 of the thin film recording and reproducing part 2 is exposed. After that, a desired thin film magnetic head is obtained by cutting along a cutting line 13. According to this method, the slider part 6 of the thin film magnetic head is used as a protective film for the thin film recording and reproducing part, too, therefore, the magnetic head can be manufactured very easily comparing with a conventional method, and also since it is unnecessary to align a position between 2 surfaces of the recording and reproducing part and the slider part, a thin film magnetic head having high accuracy is realized.
