Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain steel with enhanced wear resistance and superior cracking loss resistance by specifying the composition of a steel for a railroad wheel used after hardening and tempering the tread.
CONSTITUTION: This steel consists of 0.55W0.80% C, 0.40W1.20% Si, 0.60W1.20% Mn, 0.20W0.70% Cr and the balance essentially Fe. This steel has high strength (hardness, yield strength, tensile strength and fatigue strength) and is remarkably superior to an in-use steel in wear resistance. In addition, it has rather increased toughness and ductility (elongation, reduction of area, impact value and rupture toughness) and is superior to the in-use steel in cracking loss resistance. The lower limit of C is decided with respect to the wear resistance and strength, and more than the upper limit of C deteriorates the heat check resistance. The lower limit of Si is decided with respect to the wear resistance, and more than the upper limit of Si reduces the toughness. The lower limit of Mn is decided to prevent embrittlement due to S and to enhance the strength and toughness, and the upper limit of Mn is decided to enhance the hardenability and to prevent the formation of a structure other than pearlite. The lower limit of Cr is decided to strengthen the pearlite structure and to enhance the wear resistance, and the upper limit of Cr is decided to prevent the formation of a structure other than pearlite and the reduction of the toughness.
