Abstract

PURPOSE:To perform a reliable detection of the length of a paper irrespective of bending and breaking of a paper, by employing the maximum value out of a plurality of detecting results of the length obtained from a plural number of detectors positioned perpendicularly to a conveying direction of paper. CONSTITUTION:A plural number of projectors (not shown) and light collectors 11-17 are mounted in a conveying path 10 of papers so that they are positioned facing and opposite to each other and perpendicularly to a conveying direction (a). A time length, elapsing from a time when the light collector 17 is shielded from a light until a time when the collector 11 is shaded, is detected by counting of a clock pulse to detect a distance la of skew of papers from the detecting results. A skew value theta' deg. is then computed, and if the result is, for example, 3 deg. or more, it is rejected. If it is within 3 deg., lengths l1-l7 in the conveying direction are computed from the shading time of each of the collecting elements 11-17 to determine the maximum value as a length L of the paper.
