Abstract

PURPOSE: To attain to enhance a sulfur recovery ratio and the purity of recovered sulfur by using a composition containing an org. redox type catalyst, a multivalent metal compound and a water soluble high molecular compound with MW in a definite range to maintain good catalytic activity.
CONSTITUTION: A hydrogen sulfide containing gas is contacted with a basic aqueous medium liquid containing an org. redox type catalyst such as naphthoquinone sulfonate, anthraquinon sulfonate or the like, a compound of a multivalent metal such as Fe, Mn or the like and a water soluble high molecular compound with average MW range of 300W50,000 to absorb hydrogen sulfide and the absorbed hydrogen sulfide is recovered as sulfur by molecular oxygen. In this case, the above described metal compound is added as an auxiliary catalyst of the org. redox type catalyst and the water soluble high molecular compound is added in order to prevent the above described metal compound from being deposited to the inside of an apparatus and to maintain good catalytic activity over a long period of time.
