Abstract
PURPOSE:To economically manufacture a high-grade optical fiber with high strength by spraying a clean gas outward to seal the inlet and outlet of a spinning furnace. CONSTITUTION:A base material A for an optical fiber is fed to a spinning furnace 1 from the inlet 2, melted by heating with the core tube 4, drawn from the lower end at high speed, and taken out as an optical fiber B from the furnace 1 through the outlet 3. The furnace 1 is supplied with a suitable inert gas such as Ar, He or N2 from leading pipes 5, 6. Air or a clean gas such as N2 is sprayed on the vicinities of the inlet 2 and the outlet 3 from nozzles 7, 8 through spray pipes 9, 10, respectively, and by allowing gaseous currents C1 to flow along the periphery of the material A from the upward nozzles 7 and gaseous currents C2 to flow along the periphery of the fiber B from the downward nozzles 8, the inlet 2 and the outlet 3 are sealed. By the sealing effect the consumption of the inert gas is reduced, and impurities are prevented from entering from the outside.
