Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent early wear of joining sections of a shift rod constituting member and a connector of an outboard engine, by making an arrangement such that foreign matters, such as muddy water, etc., can not enter between there two members. CONSTITUTION:As a connector 34 and the second rod 33 are engaged with each other by a spline so that they can be freely separated, muddy water flows along a clearance between a spline groove 35 and a projecting strip 36 and enters the connector 34. In a collar 37 fixed to the bottom end section of the connector 34, however, an O ring 38 is provided in such a manner as to contact the outside surface lower than the projecting strip 36 of the second rod 33, and therefore, the muddy water and solids contained in the muddy water are prevented from entering the connector 34 by the O ring 38. For this reason, it is possible to prevent development of friction between the spline groove 35 and the projecting strip 36, and therefore, shifting operation can be achieved surely and smoothly for a long period of time.
