PURPOSE:To avoid useless movements of a compressor and contrive to conserve energy by a method wherein a compressor controlling circuit is controlled by a passenger number detecting circuit. CONSTITUTION:The passenger number detectong circuit 20 is comprised of a sensor 24 for detecting the number of passengers at the assistant driver's seat of the vehicle, a sensor 25 for detecting the number of passengers at the rear seat, NAND circuits 26, 27, NOR circuits 28, 29, a circuit 30 for inverting the output of the NAND circuit 26, and a circuit 31 for inverting the output of the NAND circuit 27. In addition, the NAND circuit 26 is fed with the outputs of the sensors 24, 25, while the NOR circuit 28 is provided with an inverting circuit 32 on one input side thereof, and the NAND circuit 27 is also provided with an inverting circuit 33 on one input side thereof.
