Abstract

PURPOSE:To stabilize a photosensitive material against overexposure fog without deteriorating sensitivity, by adding a specified thioether type antifoggant precursor to a silver halide emulsion layer or a colloidal layer water-permeable to this layer. CONSTITUTION:A silver halide emulsion layer and a colloidal layer contains a compound represented by the general formulaIin which A is a mercapto type antifoggant heterocyclic radical; B is -(R3-C-R4)- or -(N-R5)-; R1, R2 are H, alkyl, or phenyl; and R3, R4, R5 are H or alkyl. The hetero ring of A is a tetrazole, 1, 2, 4-triazole, bezoxazole, benzothiazole, or the like ring, and preferably a 5- or 6-membered ring having a -CS- side chain. This antifoggant precursor is added to the silver halide emulsion layer in an amount of 0.1-100 milimoles per mole of silver halide, or slightly more to the colloidal layer, thus permitting the obtained photosensitive material to be perfectly stable in the neutral or weakly acidic region, and to release an active antifoggant photosensitive material in the alkaline region during a development process.
