Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound which is a useful industrial intermediate safely, by chlorinating acrylonitrile by blowing chlorine while dropping the acrylonitrile to an inert solvent in which chlorine is dissolved to a state near the saturation.
CONSTITUTION: Acrylonitrile is chlorinated with chlorine while blowing the chlorine and dropping the acrylonitrile to an inert solvent, e.g. carbon tetrachloride or trichloroethane, in which the chlorine is dissolved to a state near the saturation simultaneously to give 2,3-dichloropropionitrile. Usually, a catalyst and the acrylonitrile are charged into a reactor, and the chlorine gas is blown thereinto to initiate the reaction and cause intermittent exothermic phenomenon with a periodic induction period. However, the continual blowing of the chlorine gas into the continual saturation state of the reaction system provides the reduction of the amount of oxygen in the system or below which is considered as a cause of a rapid reaction to a given amount or below. The control of the reaction is easily carried out, and the stable mild reaction conditions can be kept with a small amount of by-products.
