Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a chloride of an element of the III or V group of periodic table in high yield, by heat-treating granular active carbon soaked in an aqueous solution of a compound of an element belonging to the III, IV, or V group of periodic table under inert gas atmosphere at specific temperature, followed by reacting the compound supported on the active carbon with chlorine.
CONSTITUTION: Granular active carbon is soaked in an aqueous solution of a compound (except chloride and boric acid) of an element selected from the III, IV, or V group of periodic table and the compound is suported on the active carbon. The granular active carbon is heat-treated under inert gas atmosphere at 300W1,000°C, and the granular active carbon after heat treatment is reacted with chlorine on a fixed bed or fluidized bed, to give the desired chloride of the element of the III, IV, or V group of periodic table, e.g., boron trichloride, boron tetrachloride, zirconium tetrachloride, vanadium tetrachloride.
