Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound in high yield through simplified process, by chlorinating ethylbenzene, etc. in the presence of a sulfur compound, etc., followed by oxidation in the presence of a heavy metal and a bromine compound, and reaction with chlorinated trimethyl phosphate.
CONSTITUTION: Ethylbenzene or a substituted ethylbenzene which is replaced by mono or dichlorines at 2,4, or 5 position is chlorinated with a chlorine gas in the presence of a nucleus chlorinating catalyst and a sulfur compound (e.g., sulfur chloride, etc.), to give 2,4,5-trichloroethylbenzene. This compound is then oxidized with molecular oxygen in the presence of a heavy metal catalyst and a bromine compound (e.g., sodium bromide, etc.), to give 2,4,5-trichloroacetophenone. This compound is then chlorinated with a chlorine gas in a solvent of a lower fatty acid, to give 2,2,2',4',5'-pentachloroacetophenone, which is reacted with trimethyl phosphite, to give the desired compound.
