Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a radiation-resistant PE having improved radiation resistance and being used effectively in coating, insulation, etc., of nuclear devices and instruments, X-ray devices and instruments, etc., by adding acenaphthylene to PE and graft-polymerizing the mixture by irradiation with an ionizing radiation.
CONSTITUTION: An acenaphthylene crystal is placed in a vacuum, sealed container containing a PE film and is left standing. The PE film readily adsorbs sublimed acenapthylene vapor and reaches the saturated state of adsorption within several min, turning yellow. This film undergoes grafting reaction by irradiation with an ionizing radiation such as γ-rays. It is also possible to use a combination of acenaphthylene and an ethylenically unsaturated compound (e.g., maleic anhydride). This graft polymerization can also be carried out by dissolving acenaphthylene alone or its mixture with an ethylenically unsaturated compound in a solvent (e.g., acetone), submerging a PE in this solution and irradiating it with an ionizing radiation. It is possible to impart excellent radiation resistance.
