Abstract

PURPOSE: To avert pollution problems with simple operation and to produce 1, 4-naphthoquinone derivatives efficiently by electrolytically oxidizing 2-methyl- 5, 8-dihydro-1, 4-naphthohydroquinone in an org. solvent contg. supporting electrolyte.
CONSTITUTION: The 2-methyl-5, 8-dihydro-1, 4-naphthoquinone expressed by the formula II is electrolytically oxidized in the presence of 0.1W30wt% supporting electrolyte in an org. solvent. The electrolytic oxidation of this case is accomplished by maintaining current density at 100W0.5mA/cm2 and -10W80°C temps. Further, for example, perchloric acid, alkali metallic salt of perchloric acid, etc. are more preferably used for the above-mentioned supporting electrolyte. Alcohols such as methanols, carboxylic acids such as formic acids, etc. are used as the org. solvent. By this electrolytic oxidation, the 2-methyl-1, 4-naphthoquinone or 2-methyl-5, 8-dihydronaphthoquinone is obtained efficiently, post-treatments are easy, and there is no need for treatment of waste.
