Abstract
PURPOSE: To decrease the amount of residual unreacted monomers and thereby to improve the production efficiency, by heightening the internal pressure of the reaction system by introducting an inert gas at the end of the polymerization, in producing a latex by emulsion-polymerizing a conjugated diolefin.
CONSTITUTION: A monomer mixture containing at least 20wt% of a conjugated diolefin (other copolymerizable monomers being styrenes, acrylate esters, acrylonitrile or the like) is emulsion-polymerized in batch. At a point when the conversion into polymer reaches about 80% (generally, the internal pressure of a reaction vessel has dropped to below about 1kg/cm2.G), an inert gas (e.g., nitrogen) is introduced into the reaction vessel to increase the internal pressure of the vessel to above 1.5kg/cm2.G (preferably, 2W7kg/cm2.G) and then the polymerization is continued. The above process is especially effective, when applied to the production of polymer latexes, average particle size ≥about 0.15μ.
