Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound, economically, from a specific carboxylic acid and epichlorohydrin under specific conditions, by adding specific amounts of alkali metal hydroxide to the reaction system in three lots, and recovering excess epichlorohydrin before the third reaction step.
CONSTITUTION: 1 Mole of the compoound of formulaI(R1WR4 are alkyl) is mixed with 3W6 moles of epichlorohydrin (ECH) and 0.1W0.2 mole of a concentrated aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide (MOH), and made to react at 60W80°C until the acid value of the reaction liquid decreases below 1. A concentrated aqueous solution of 0.65W0.90 mole of MOH is added little by little to the reaction mixture at 100W200 mmHg pressure and 60W70°C while distilling out the water from the azeotropic mixture with ECH. After the addition of the MOH, the reaction is terminated and the excess ECH is recovered. The reaction mixture obtained after the recovery of ECH is mixed with 0.03W0.15 mole of MOH aqueous solution and made to react at 70W90°C to obtain the compound of formula II in high yield and purity, with relatively simple procedure.
