Abstract

PURPOSE:To judge that an input word belongs to a type of the highest cummulative resemblance degree, by comparing respective characters constituting the input word with standard pattern groups of different types to accumulate the resemblance degree for the input word in every type. CONSTITUTION:The optical scanning signal from a scanner 20 which scans the character entry face of a document is converted to an electric signal is sent to a character cutting circuit 21 to detect the size and the position of each character. Cut two-dimensional patterns are stored in a storage element 26, and meanwhile, a normalizing circuit 22 uses information concerning the size and the position of each character detected by the circuit 21 to normalize each character to a constant size and stores it in a storage element 27. An editing circuit 23 uses position information of each character detected by the circuit 21 to edit characters to every word. A character type discriminating circuit 24 discriminates the type (alphanumeric) of each word. A final judging circuit 25 uses the alphanumeric discrimination result to judge the word read finally.
