Abstract

PURPOSE: A mineral acid salt of optically active aminoalcohol, which is readily synthesized and used as a resolving reagent, is added to an alkali metal salt of DL-pantoic acid and the formed salt is fractionated by crystallization, decomposed and converted into the lactone, thus producing the titled substance used as an intermediate of drugs in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: An alkali such as sodium hydroxide is made to act on DL-pantolactone to form an alkali metal salt of DL-pantoic acid and a mineral acid salt of optically active aminoalcohol of the formula (R is methyl, isopropyl, isobutyl) is made to act on the above pantoic acid as a resolving reagent by less than 1mol, preferably 0.5W0.8mol/mol of the DL-pantoic acid salt to prepare its diastereomer. The resultant dastereomer is fractionated by crystallization and decomposed to give an optically active pantoic acid, which is lactonized to produce the objective lactone.
