Abstract

PURPOSE:To detect viscosity accurately without using a large-sized expensive device by a method wherein a buoy moving according to the difference of specific gravity with a viscosity measured liquid is mounted into the liquid of an ink jet printer, and an optical detecting means detecting the movement is set up. CONSTITUTION:An ink tank is divided into two sections by a filter 102, a pair of cylindrical stems 111, 112 with bottoms are fitted to the second ink tank 101, and the doughnut-shaped buoy 113 is inserted to the stem 111. The specific gravity of the buoy 113 is set to approximately 1.050-1.058g/m<3> and it sinks downward when the viscosity of normal ink, but the buoy 113 rises up to a position of a stopper 117 before specific gravity reaches 1.060g/m<3> when the viscosity of ink increases. Then, the buoy 113 is detected by means of a light-emitting doide 114 and a phototransistor 115 mounted into the stems 111, 112, and the viscosity of ink can be adjusted on the basis of the detecting signals.
