Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a polymer having a wide molecular weight distribution and being excellent in uniformity, etc., by polymerizing ethylene in multiple stages by use of a high-activity-sustaining catalyst and setting the average polymer production per unit solid catalyst in each stage at a specified range.
CONSTITUTION: A catalyst system consisting of an organometallic compound component and a high-activity supported Ziegler catalyst having a polymer production capacity of above 20,000 times by weight and having a sufficient residual activity at a point where 15.000 times by weight of polymer has been produced, is used in the (co)polymn of ethylene. Then, the purpose (co)polymer is obtained by carrying out the polymerization in the second reaction zone, growing a low-molecular weight polymer having a MW lower than that in the first stage reaction zone around the polymer particles from the first reaction zone, controlling the average polymer production per solid catalyst in each stage except the final stage to below 15,000 times and selecting the polymer production in each stage so that the overall average polymer production per solid catalyst is above 5,000 times.
