Abstract

PURPOSE: To adhere pigment particles to the surfaces of fluorescent substance particles with a water-insoluble metallic alginate placed therebetween, by forming the metallic alginate on the surfaces of the fluorescent substance particles and pigment particles in an aqueous medium, mixing the particles, and reacting the particles with metallic ions.
CONSTITUTION: A metallic alginate containing an alkali metallic alginate is formed on the surfaces of fluorescent particles, preferably a particle diameter of 3W15μ, preferably dispersed in primary particles and/or pigment particles, preferably a particle diameter of 0.3W1.0μm, in an aqueous medium, and the both particles are then mixed. The metallic alginate is then reacted with metallic ions, e.g. Zn2+, Al3+, Sr2+ and Ba2+, to form a water-insoluble salt, and pigment particles are applied to the surfaces of the fluorescent substance particles.
EFFECT: The resultant fluorescent substance coated with the pigment particles has improved chemical stability and dispersibility in an aqueous solution, and stable to the germinal contamination e.g. by bacteria, with very little pigment peeling in a slurry for coating the fluorescent substance. Thus, the slurry can be continuously used and recycled for a long term.
