Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a steel having both high strength, especially superior strength characteristics at high temp. and superior toughness by adding Cr to an Mn-1/2Mo steel or further adding Cu and Ni.
CONSTITUTION: This steel consists of, by wt., 0.07W0.22% C, 0.05W0.50% Si, 1.00W1.60% Mn, 0.10W1.00% Cr, 0.45W0.60% Mo, 0.005W0.100% sol. Al and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities or further contains 0.10W0.50% Cu and/ or 0.10W1.00% Ni. Cr increases the hardenability during normalizing to improve the toughess, and it inhibits Fe3C from coarsening during annealing to minimize the embrittlement. The lower and upper limits of Cr are decided with respect to the effect and the weldability, respectively. Cu and Ni enhance the strength furthermore, the lower limit or more of Cu prevents the strength from being reduced during annealing, and the lower limit or more Ni increases the hardenability during normlizing to enhance the strength and toughness. More than the upper limit of Cu tends to, however, cause surface cracking, and more than the upper limit of Ni increases the cost.
