Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve peeling or separation of a colorant from magnetic fine powder and deterioration of a toner due to mechanical shock and shearing stress, by surface-treating the colorant or the magnetic powder with a substance same as or similar to a matrix polymer. CONSTITUTION:A colorant and/or magnetic fine powder is surface-treated with a substance same as a matrix polymer or approximate to the matrix polymer by <=3.0, preferably, <=2.0 in the difference of solubility parameter between this substance and the matrix polymer. This surface treatment method is embodied by graft-copolymerizing a monomer with the surfaces of the colorant or the magnetic powder, thus permitting the colorant or the powder to be strongly combined with the matrix polymer and its dispersion to be enhanced extremely favorably. For example, when polystyrene is used for the matrix polymer of the toner, styrene is graft-copolymerized with the surface of carbon black.
