Abstract
PURPOSE: To simplify the process of coating an optical fiber and to manufacture an optical fiber cable with high density by coating the surface of the fiber with a rubber-like elastic body with no surface tackiness optionally after primary coating.
CONSTITUTION: An optical fiber is optionally coated with thermoplastic resin, thermosetting resin or the like to form a primary coat, and it is coated with a rubberlike elastic body with no surface tackiness. The elastic body is natural rubber, its deriv., urethane rubber, butadiene rubber, silicone rubber or the like, and silicone rubber is used most suitably. In order to deprive the elastic body of the surface tackiness, fine powder of silica, titanium oxide, zinc oxide or the like is added in case of silicone rubber. The average particle size of the powder is desirably ≤ about 500mμ. Thus, secondary coating can be eliminated.
