Abstract

848,588. Cleaning surfaces contaminated with radioactive materials. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 5, 1959 [June 5, 1958], No. 17938/58. Class 138(1). Particulate or fluid radioactive material is removed from a contaminated surface by applying to the surface a liquid material which will dry, cure, or polymerize to form a continuous, coherent, flexible film which can be stripped from the surface, allowing the liquid material to form a film and stripping the film from the surface. The liquid material may consist of a curable or polymerisable liquid of low molecular weight, or a natural or synthetic rubber latex, or an aqueous or non-aqueous dispersion or solution of a rubber like material. Preferably the liquid material consists of prevulcanized natural rubber latex prepared by heating a mixture of natural rubber latex containing sulphur, zinc dibutyl dithiocarbonate, and a surface active agent. The prevulcanized latex may be sprayed, brushed, poured, or spread over the contaminated surface. The cleaning of a fume cupboard surface experimentally contaminated with uranium powder, and of a bitumen-lined sump experimentally, contaminated with dried-out liquid radioactive effluents is described.
