Abstract

PURPOSE: To eliminate the resisting torque exerted on an upper runner by water and shorten the period of time required for starting the reversible pump-turbine by having a water discharge pipe opened into an intermediate water chamber bounded between the upper runner and a lower runner, in the titled reversible pump-turbine provided with an upper and a lower runner.
CONSTITUTION: The intermediate water chamber 44 is defined between the upper runner 36 and the lower runner 38, and the water discharge pipe 50 has one end opened into the chamber 44. The pipe 50 is provided with an on-off valve 52 and a pump 54 so that the water contained in the chamber 44 can be transferred into a container 56 and stored therein. For starting the pump-turbine, guide vanes 42, 46 are closed (in this condition the chamber incorporating the runners 36, 38 is filled with the water), the valve 52 is opened and the water discharge pump 54 is started to discharge water untile the water level is lowered to a level L2. Accordingly, a pump operation can be started without any resisting torque exerted on the upper runner 36 by water.
