Abstract

PURPOSE:To make it possible to measure chromium content in an alodine coating with simplicity even in the case of using a chromium-containing alloy as a metallic matrix, by measuring phosphorus content in a chemically formed coating by fluorescent X-ray. CONSTITUTION:A test piece is to be prepared by using iron or aluminum or their alloys containing chromium and other alloying components, as a matrix, and providing the surface with an alodine coating in order to improve the corrosion resistance and the adhesiveness to paint. For the chemical formation of the alodine coating, an aqueous solution containing an auxiliary agent such as chromic acid, phosphoric acid and hydrogen fluoride, etc. is sprayed on the metallic matrix to provide the surface with a non-metallic coating. By applying radiation of X-ray onto thus prepared test piece, intensity of fluorescent X-ray emitting from phosphorus contained in the alodine coating is measured, and chromium content is measured on the basis of the measured intensity. It is possible, by doing so, to execute a measurement with simplicity and rapidity without necessity of making correction for the chromium content.
