Abstract

PURPOSE:To detect the position of a travelling object without regulating the moving range of the travelling object, by obtaining the correlative function between plural distance function signals stored in a storage device and the distance function signal sent from a contour detector and then having the discrimination for the degree of coincidence between both signals. CONSTITUTION:A contour detector 3 mounted on an unmanned car 1 which travels within a certain space measures a distance (d) between the car 1 and an obstacle X. This distance signal and an angle signal of each time are written into a memory of an electronic computer 8 in the form of the distance function signals. At the same time, the devices within the space which can be viewed at the front from the car 1 and the profile of the wall surface are previously stored in the memory as plural distance function signals. These signals are compared with the distance function signals supplied from the detector 3. Thus the position and direction signals of the car 1 are outputted based on the conditions by which the distance function signal to which a coincidence is obtained.
