Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce 4-butanolides (butyrolactones) in high yields by electrolytically reducing aldehyde and acrylic ester with the electrode of lead or lead alloy in an aq. emulsion state in the co-presence of a conductive supporting salt consisting of inorg. cation or the quaternary ammonium ion expressed by the specific general formula as its cation and an inter-phase moving catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Satd. straight chain aliphatic aldehyde of 5W13 C numbers is used for aldehyde and lower alkyl ester of an acrylic acid, particularly, methyl acrylate is used for acrylic ester. This acrylic ester and aldehyde are put in an aq. emulsion state in the co-presence of a conductive supporting group using inorg. cation or the quaternary ammonium ion expressed by the formula as its cation and an inter-phase moving catalyst, and is electrolytically reduced with the cathode of lead or an alloy consisting essentially of lead. R1WR4 in the formula are alkyl groups of 1W5 C numbers and the sum total of R1WR4 is kept at ≤12.
