Abstract
PURPOSE: The cathode is composed of a complex electrode from carbon and a hydroquinone derivative and further a quarternary organic ammonium salt is used as the supporting electrolyte, whereby the hydroquinone derivative is insolubilized to elongate the time of display memory.
CONSTITUTION: A solution prepared by dissolving a display material that can be colored with electrolytic reversiblity and a supporting electrolyte in an inert solvent is used as an electrolysis solution and the display electrode and the opposite electrode are brought into contact with the solution to form the device for electrochromic display wherein the cathod is composed of a complex electrode containing carbon and a hydroquinone derivative and a compound of quaternary organic ammonium salt, preferably of formula I (R1WR4 are 1W7C alkyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl which may be substituted with alkyl group; X is electrochemically inert anion) or formula II (R5, R6 are H, 1W8C alkyl, phenyl which may be substituted with alkyl; Y is electrochemically inactive anion) is used as the supporting electrolyte.
