Abstract
PURPOSE: To contrive to shorten the period of time required for gear cutting and make the gear cutting process suitable for mass production by a method wherein the feed of a nob for cutting is effected along a straight line which lies in a plane orthogonal to the rotation axis of the hob and passes through the rotation center of a blank to be gear cut.
CONSTITUTION: The hob 3 is mounted with an axis-to-axis distance S of larger than the normal axis-to-axis distance So, and it is fed for cutting to such a position that the axis-to-axis distance becomes So. The hob 3 is mounted with a helix angle against the rotating blank 2, and the cutting edges of the hob 3 are engaged with the blank 2 along the line of intersection of the blank 2 and a plane containing the hob axis, by which reason the hob 3 is formed in an hourglass shape. Accordingly, for cutting gears which are small in width and thickness, there is no need to move the hob 3 in the axial direction, the only necessity being to move the hob 3 in the radial direction at the time of starting and finishing the cutting operation. Therefore, a gear on a cam shaft or a stepped gear can also be cut easily.
