USE: A synthetic intermediate of (1RS,4SR,5RS)-4-(4,8-dimethyl-5-hydroxy-7-nonenyl)-4-methyl-3,8-dioxabicyclo-[3.2.1]-octa-1-acetic acid useful as a contraceptive.
PROCESS: The compound of formulaIis prepared by the rearrangement of 1-halogeno-5,6-epoxy-6-methyl-2-heptanol of formula II (Y is 2-tetrahydropyranyl, 1- methoxyethyl, etc.) or its derivative, e.g. in a solvent in the presence of aluminum trialkoxide at 50W120°C for 1W10hr.
