Abstract
PURPOSE:To compress multilevel picture data efficiently, by performing the run length encoding in a section of a constant density level and by encoding a density level difference in a section of continuity of the change of the density level and by adding a section end code. CONSTITUTION:Since scanning steps 0-3 are in a section of continuity of the white level, this section is encoded to ''010'' of the Weyl code. Since scanning steps 3-7 are in a section where the density level is changed continuously, scanning steps 4, 5, 6, and 7 are encoded to ''011'', ''101'', ''1110'', and ''1111'' is accordance with respective picture element density levels. After them, ''110'' of the section end code (EOD) is added. Since scanning steps 7-9 are in a section of continuity of the density level 7, this section is encoded to ''10'' of the mix code. Sections are encoded similarly hereafter.
