Abstract
PURPOSE:To compress multilevel picture data efficiently, by performing the run length encoding in a section of a constant density level and by encoding a density level difference in a section of continuity of the change of the density level and by adding a section end code. CONSTITUTION:Since scanning steps 0-3 are in a section of continuity of the white level, they are encoded to ''010'' of the Weyl code. Since scanning steps 3-7 are in a section of continuity of the change of the density level, they are encoded to respective picture element density levels ''011'', ''101'', ''1110'', and ''1111'' of scanning steps 4, 5, 6, and 7, and a section end code EOD ''110'' is added. Since scanning steps 7-9 are in a section of continuity of the density level 7, they are encoded to ''10'' of the mix code. Sections are encoded similarly hereafter.
