PURPOSE:To compress multilevel picture data efficiently, by performing the run length encoding in a section of a constant density level and by converting the course of the change of the density level to a peculiar code in a section where the density level rises or falls continuously. CONSTITUTION:Since scanning steps 0-3 are in a section of continuity of the white level, they are encoded to ''010'' of the Weyl code. Since the density level rises continuously and the density level difference is 7 in scanning steps 3-7, ''000'' of the change course code is assigned to them. In this section, an error code delta=10100 is added in accordance with the change of the density level difference.
