Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled fibers, having improved strength and Young's modulus and heat shrinkage, by mixing polyethylene terephthalate (PET) with a polyazomethine having the ability to form the melt anisotropy, melt extruding the mixture, and drawing the resultant fibers.
CONSTITUTION: (A) 70W99.5wt% polyethylene terephthalate (PET) having a reduced viscosity of preferably 0.7W1.5 is mixed with (B) 0.5W30wt%, preferably 1W15wt%, polyazomethine, having a flow temperature between 250 and 350°C, and capable of forming the optically anisotropic phase (liquid crystal phase) on heat melting, preferably having a flow temperature of 250W350°C, and melt extruded. The resultant fibers are then drawn to give the aimed fibers having an aspect ratio of the dispersed component (B) ≥1.5 (ratio between the length in the long direction of the fibers and the length in the direction perpendicular to the long direction of the fibers) and a degree of crystal orientation of at least 80% measured by the X-ray diffractometry of the PET part. The components (A) and (B) may be melt extruded while mixed with each other.
USE: Tire cords, etc.
