A filter 12 has characteristics inverse to the emphasis characteristics of the encoder 3. In recording, when a switch 11 is placed at a side (a), the recorded signal from an input terminal 1 is compressed by the encoder 3 and then displayed on a level meter 10 through the filter 12. In reproduction, when the switch 11 is changed over to a side (b), a reproduction signal to be expanded by the decoder 8 is supplied to the level meter 10 through the filter 12. Thus, wide-range level display is carried out accurately.
