Abstract
PURPOSE: To perform an efficient and stable operation with reduced unit-consumption of power by a method wherein alumina supply is started with the estimation of anode effect initiation or a required additional power is superposed on the regular power supply within a short period after the initiation of anode effect.
CONSTITUTION: An operation is performed to reduce unit consumption for Al by maintaining a cell voltage nearly constant and as low as practical at regular time of operation. The operation necessarily reduces the electrolytic cell temperature and slows down the dissoving speed of supplied alumina into the cell. Thus, when anode effect is predicted, its initiation must be prevented by adding alumina. This is done so that at the same time as the alumina supply or within 3hr after the initiation of anode effect, power as shown in the equation below, if positive, is superposed to be supplied to the cell. W=A-B (wherein, W: added power, A: control target power, 0.2W1.0 times the power equivalent to calorific value required to dissolve alumina supplied to suppress or stop the anode effect, and B: power supplied excessively from the regular condition during the initiation of anode effect to its suppression.).
