Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide the steel piston ring material excellent in resistance to wear and to heat-induced fatigue deformation by preparing an alloy containing specified proportions of C, Si, Mn, Cr and Mo, with the balance consisting of Fe.
CONSTITUTION: The material is martensitic stainless steel containing, by weight, 0.5W0.8% of C, up to 2.0% of Si, up to 2.0% of Mn, 10.0W15.5% of Cr and 0.2W 1.5% of Mo, the balance being Fe and unavoidable impurities, and optionally added with at least one element selected from the group consisting of 0.3W3.0% W, 0.1W1.0% of V and 0.01W0.3% of Nb. The material is used in the heat-treated condition and contains about 5W15% or undissolved carbide. In addition, the material has a high temper-softening resistance, a very high strength at high temperature and excellent air-tightness for a cylinder.
