Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent knocking and surging by providing a reservoir which is connected to a blast passage of a branch from a suction port, opening close to a suction valve into the suction port and varies in capacity with change of pressure about the opening location of the blast passage, close to the suction valve.
CONSTITUTION: A reservoir 12 is formed in a suction manifold 6 by a diaphragm 11. The diaphragm on one side of the reservoir 12 is urged by the pressure in an atmospheric pressure room 15 and the repulsion force of a spring 13. On the opposite side, the reservoir is communicated with a blast passage 10 opening at a point close to a suction valve 8 of a suction port 7. When a supercharger is operated to cause the average pressure in the suction manifold higher than the atmospheric pressure, the reservoir 12 is expanded for a temporary storage of the air fuel mixture, with the suction valve 8 closed. In the suction stroke, inrush of the mixture is swirled into a combustion chamber 9. As a result, the mixture forms a sufficient turbulent flow and led to a compression stroke thereby accelerating the combustion speed and preventing knocking due to the occurrence of no unburnt gas and surging due to even suction pressure.
