Abstract
PURPOSE: To remove foams easily so as to make water electrolysis at a high current density possible, by using porous, spongy Ni, on the surface of which are baked Ni powder and Co powder, as the anode for water electrolysis.
CONSTITUTION: Ni or Ni alloy of irregular, three-dimensional network structure, on which fine powder of Ni and Co is baked, is used as the anode in the manufacture of hydrogen gas by the electrolysis of slightly alkaline water. Spongy porous material 1 having pores 2 at ≥90% porosity is used as the network structure material. The spongy porous material 1 is painted on the surface with slurry of very fine powder of Ni and Co of 0.01W10μ particle diameter made by using org. solvent and bonding agent such as nitrocotton and alginic acid. After dried, the slurry is baked at 800W1,000°C temp. to form baked layer of Ni and Co 1W20μ thickness. This anode is porout and has very large surface area, and use of the anode allows to remove foams from the electrode surface, and to perform the electrolysis at a low electrolysis overvoltage and at a high current density.
