PURPOSE:To improve energy efficiency by utilizing the heat energy released during cooling by water spraying for preheating of a metal wire in continuous softening of the metal wire by heating and cooling. CONSTITUTION:A metal wire of copper, Al or the like is passed through the preheating part 6 of a preheating and primary cooling device 5 and is passed through the primary cooling part 7 of the device 5 via a guide roller 31, feed sheaves 33, 34, after which it is passed through a secondary cooling device 8, thence it is dried and is taken up by a take-up device 4. In this case, AC or DC is supplied to the wire W between the sheaves 33 and 34, whereby it is heated to above the recrystallization temp. and is softend. Protective atmosphere chambers 35 and 36 are provided between the sheaves 34 and 35 and around the sheave 34, and steam or inert gas is held sealed therein. At the inlet of a cooling chamber 7, water is directly sprayed to the wire W which is at above the recrystallization temp. The steam generated hereby is sent to the preheating part 6 and is used for preheating the wire W.
