Abstract
PURPOSE: To prevent steel surfaces from corrosion and adhesion of marine living organisms, by applying polymer cement coatings onto surfaces of steel articles in contact with sea water, hardening the coatings, and further applying a mixture of metallic copper powder and the polymer cement to the surfaces.
CONSTITUTION: A surface of a steel or concrete article in contact with sea water is coated with a polymer cement layer. The polymer cement is prepared by blending a portland cement, blast furnace cement or a mixture of the cement and a fine aggragate with an aqueous polymer emulsion. After the polymer cement layer is hardened, the surface is further coated with a mixture of metallic copper powder and the polymer cement. Owing to the metallic copper powder acting as a toxic component to marine living organisms and also the polymer cement effective in corrosion prevention of the steel surface, the steel surface is protected from corrosion and from adhesion of marine living organisms.
