Abstract
PURPOSE: A used catalyst containing titanium dioxide and divanadium pentoxide is brought into contact with oxalic acid, sulfuric acid and a sodium hydroxide solution to remove and recover the vanadium and enable the reuse of the carrier.
CONSTITUTION: A catalyst containing titanium dioxide, divanadium pentoxide, preferably tungsten sesquioxide that is applied to the catalytic denitrification using ammonia as a reducing agent is treated, after used, with oxalic acid to remove the divanadium pentoxide by extraction according to equations I and II. The oxalic acid remaining in the catalyst is readily decomposed by heating. Or the catalyst is treated with sulfuric acid and the vanadium is extracted according to equation III. The extract is oxidized with sodium hypochlorite or the like and adjusted in pH to give the vanadium in the form of divanadium pentoxide. When the catalyst is treated with a sodium hydroxide solution, the divanadium pentoxide and tungsten sesquioxide shift into the liquid phase according equations IV and V. In any case, titanium dioxide is inert and removed from the carrier by a physical means, thus permitting the recovery of valuable components, treatment of catalyst into a pollution-free form and reuse of the carrier.
