Abstract
PURPOSE: Geseous carbon dioxide, which has been previously cooled to a temperature that is as low as possible in the range exceeding the solidifying temperature, is jetted into a chamber which is being kept to a prescribed temperature to produce solidified carbon dioxide with saving of the compression power for liquefaction and elimination of the adiabatic expansion by jetting.
CONSTITUTION: After a nitrogen gas was circulated to keep the inside of chamber 1 to a prescribed temperature ranging from -100 to -150°C previously, the feedstock of carbon dioxide, from which impurities such as water or sulfides have been removed, is fed to pipe 5 leading to jetting nozzle 3 for carbon dioxide where the carbon oxide is cooled to -70°C in the intermediate pipe 5 by a low-temperature nitrogen gas flowing in both of the outer and center pipes 4 and 6. The carbon dioxide that has been cooled to -70°C in the intermediate pipe 5 is jetted through slit 8 into the chamber 1 to expand to normal pressure. As a result, the temp. of the carbon dioxide drops to -72°C and is cooled to -150°C with the nitrogen gas that is fed from pipe 13 into the chamber 1 where it is cooled by gaseous N2, which is the atmosphere of said chamber, to -150°C under approximately atmospheric pressure to be converted instantly into snowlike dry ice.
