Abstract
PURPOSE: A coal is dissolved in a hydrocarbon solvent in a gas atmosphere containing hydrogen and decomposed with heat in the presence of a catalyst of solid acid in a hydrogen-containing gas atmosphere to produce the starting material for carbon material, which is used as a coke for making electrodes, in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: A coal such as bituminous coal or brown coal is crushed into a powder of appropriate particle sizes and mixed with a hydrocarbon solvent boiling at 180W400°C to form a slurry in which the weight ratio is 1 of the coal to 1W10 of the solvent. Then, the slurry is heated at 370W450°C and higher than 10kg/cm2G hydrogen partial pressure for 1W60min to effect dissolution and the insoluble part is removed. The resultant coal solution is thermally decomposed in the presence of a solid acid catalyst such as silica-alumina or zeolite at 10W200kg/cm2 hydrogen partial pressure and 370W450°C for 30W90min. The catalyst and the solvent are removed to give the starting material for carbon material. The use of the resultant starting material enables the production of coke for electrodes with low ash content and good graphitization property and of carbon fiber with high strength in low costs.
