Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled polymer useful for the formation of an image-forming element, an electrophotographic photosensitive material, etc. as a photoconducting material, by a method wherein a 9-alkyl-3,6-dihalocarbazole is reacted with Mg, and the resulting product is polymerized in the presence of a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A 9-alkyl-3,6-dihalocarbazole of formula I (wherein X is Br, I; R is 1W8C alkyl) dissolved in a solvent (e.g. tetrahydrofuran) is reacted with Mg. Then the resulting product is polymerized at a temp. of 20W100°C in the presence of a catalyst [e.g. bis(triphenylphosphine)dichloronickel or 2,2'-bipyridinedichloronickel] to obtain a poly(n-alkyl-3,6-carbazolediyl) of formula II (wherein n is a positive integer). In the reaction of the N-alkyl-3,6-dihalocarbazole with Mg, an equimolar amount or a slightly excess amount of Mg is used.
