Abstract
PURPOSE: To manufacture an ultralow Si free-cutting steel with superior machinability and cold workability by adjusting the lining refractory of a molten steel vessel used in a low Si free-cutting steel refining process to a composition free from SiO2 simple crystals.
CONSTITUTION: When molten steel is discharged into a vessel such as a ladle or a tundish in the refining of a low Si free-cutting steel contg. <0.005% Si, SiO2 in the lining refractory of the vessel is reduced to Si to often increase the Si content of the molten steel. In order to prevent the reduction, SiO2 in the refractory is allowed to exist in the form of an eutectic compound of SiO2 and other basic or neutral oxide in place of SiO2 simple crystals. Accordingly, the SiO2 content of the refractory is adjusted to ≤30%, ≤50%, ≤60%, ≤30% ≤50% and ≤30% in case of Al2O3-SiO2, CaO-SiO2, MgO-SiO2 CaO-Al2O3-SiO2, CaO-MgO-SiO2, and MgO- -Al2O3-SiO2 respectively. Thus, an increase of Si from the lining refractory by reduction is prevented, and a free-cutting steel contg. ≤0.005% Si can be manufactured.
