Abstract
PURPOSE: To enable a copolymer of ethylene, a specified olefinically unsaturated silane cpd. and an ethylenically unsaturated cpd. to be crosslinked with water, said copolymer having the same fabrication properties as conventional ethylene resins, by a method wherein a silanol condensation catalyst is incorporated into the copolymer of ethylene, the specified olefinically unsaturated silane cpd. and the ethylennically unsaturated cpd.
CONSTITUTION: 0.001W15wt% of an unsaturated silane cpd. of the formula (wherein R is an olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbon gp. or hydrocarbonoxy; Y is hydrolyzable org. gp.; R' is an aliph. satd. hydrocarbon gp.; n is 0, 1, or 2 and Ys may not be the same when more than one Y are present) (e.g. vinyltrimethoxysilane, vinyltriacetoxysilane), 0.5W40wt% of an ethylenically unsaturated cpd. such as vinyl acetate, (meth)acrylic ester, acrylonitrile, and the remaining amount of ethylene, are copolymerized in the presence of a free-radical catalyst. The resulting copolymer is molded into a sheet. The sheet is immersed in a soln. of a silanol condensation catalyst such as dibutyltin dilaurate, and then heated in hot water at a temp of room temp W200°C, generally up to 80°C to effect the crosslinking reaction.
